After careful consideration, Mr. Mercier informed the board of his decision to pass on the torch, believing that the time has come to start a new chapter, both for himself and for the organization. He will remain in office until the succession process has been completed, by the end of 2026, to ensure a smooth and structured transition.
“After 10 exciting years at the head of UV Insurance, I feel a sense of accomplishment today. I am proud of the progress our teams have made and deeply grateful to all those who have contributed to our success,” said Mr. Mercier.
Ten years of transformation
Following a distinguished military career in the Canadian Armed Forces, Christian Mercier was appointed President and CEO of UV Insurance in December 2016. Upon his arrival, he initiated a major organizational transformation to respond to the challenges of the insurance industry while ensuring regulatory requirements and compliance standards were met. With a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in defence studies, Mr. Mercier leveraged his strategic discipline to modernize all infrastructure, both physical and technological, in order to secure data and improve the organization’s operations process. He also significantly strengthened the company’s cybersecurity mechanisms and culture, with the support of internal experts who have become leaders in the field.
Under Mr. Mercier’s leadership, the company changed its brand image and name to UV Insurance, upgraded its IT systems to better support growth and enhance the advisor and policyholder experience, built a new modern head office, and restructured teams for greater agility and talent diversity. These initiatives have enabled UV Insurance to reinforce its position in Quebec and strengthen its presence across Canada. Mr. Mercier has also distinguished himself among his peers, serving as a director of the Canadian Life & Health Insurance Association (CLHIA) and the Association canadienne des compagnies d’assurances de personnes (ACCAP), and representing the industry on multiple occasions before government authorities.
Among his notable accomplishments, Mr. Mercier led the historic acquisition of a portfolio of life insurance policies from BMO Insurance, nearly doubling the number of clients nationally and significantly strengthening member equity. The transaction, which was concluded in 2025, was effectively integrated thanks to modernized technology systems, the result of a massive transformation effort by Mr. Mercier and his team.
Leadership focused on people and relationships
Beyond the organizational and technological transformation, Mr. Mercier stood out for a deeply human leadership style. Known for his motivational approach and strong relationship with his teams, he has created a culture of collaboration, accountability and a proud sense of belonging. Inspired by his military career, he promoted discipline, trust and teamwork while fostering an open environment where people feel heard. In recent years, UV Insurance has strengthened its employer value proposition by focusing on talent development, a highly competitive benefits portfolio, a modern and enjoyable work environment, and a culture of participatory leadership. This focus on employee well-being and its openness to youth and diversity has helped build a strong employer brand that positions UV Insurance today as an employer of choice able to attract and retain top talent.
As a proud UV Insurance ambassador, Mr. Mercier has remained involved in the Drummondville community while continuing his personal volunteer activities with Canada Company, the Cercle de la Garnison club, and the Canadian Grenadier Guards, where he was appointed Honorary Colonel in 2024. A recognized and respected member of the Drummondville business community, he has maintained and promoted a culture of solidarity within UV Insurance by supporting several social impact initiatives each year.
Board recognizes Mr. Mercier’s leadership and commitment
The Board of Directors wishes to express its profound appreciation to Mr. Mercier for his leadership, strategic vision and unwavering commitment to the mission and values of the mutual company.
“On behalf of the Board of Directors, I would like to extend our warmest thanks to Mr. Mercier for his 10 years of outstanding commitment. His leadership has enabled the company to take decisive steps and position UV Insurance as a key player in the insurance industry in Canada. We congratulate him on his remarkable career and express our sincere gratitude,” said Alain Bédard, Chair of the Board of Directors.
The Board of Directors is now initiating a rigorous succession process to identify the next person to lead the organization. The directors are approaching this transition with confidence and optimism, with a view to ensuring the well-being of employees and continuing the sustained growth of UV Insurance.
